Non-Electric Boat Reverse Osmosis System – OneZero French Eaux
Water on board is often the weakest link of a cruise. Hard-to-clean tanks, bulky plastic bottles, power-hungry electric watermakers: the OneZero French Eaux solves all three at once — no pump, no noise, no electrical connection required.
The real problem with water on board
Most sailors don't drink the water from their onboard tank. For good reason: boat tanks — whether stainless steel, plastic or rubber bladder — gradually become contaminated. They can't be fully drained between trips, they're filled from marina hoses of unknown cleanliness, and the water sits stagnant for weeks between outings.
The default solution? Bottled water brought on board for every trip. Convenient in theory, but quickly becomes a burden: weight, storage space, plastic waste, recurring cost. On a two-week cruise with four people, that's easily twenty kilos and close to a hundred bottles.
The other option — an electric watermaker — is designed to produce fresh water from seawater. Effective for offshore passages, but expensive, power-hungry and completely oversized for coastal cruising where tanks are filled at the marina.
The OneZero French Eaux answers a different need: purifying the water already on board — from the tank, however long it has been sitting — directly at the point of use, without touching the boat's electrical system.
How does the OneZero work on board?
The OneZero installs between the boat's water supply and a dedicated tap — typically under the galley sink or chart table. It needs no electrical connection whatsoever: the network pressure alone (from 1.5 bar) drives the reverse osmosis membrane and produces purified water.
Its membrane filters out up to 99.9% of contaminants present in tank water: bacteria, viruses, residual chlorine, heavy metals, microplastics, nitrates, pesticides and pharmaceutical residues. The result is clean, fresh-tasting water — no plastic aftertaste, no stale smell — drawn on demand directly on board.
Installation is straightforward and requires no work on the boat's electrical panel. The system produces 15 litres per hour in complete silence, which comfortably covers the drinking water needs of a crew of four to six.
It can be mounted flat or vertically depending on available space — under the sink, in a technical compartment or a locker. Its compact footprint (360 × 360 × 150 mm, 8.2 kg) makes it compatible with the vast majority of leisure boats.
OneZero vs electric watermaker: what's the difference on board?
A standard onboard electric watermaker draws between 50 and 150 W continuously. On a sailing yacht, that's a real constraint on the battery bank — especially in light wind conditions with limited solar input. The OneZero draws zero watts. No impact on power management, none at all.
Electric watermakers are also engineered to desalinate seawater at very high pressure (55 bar and above). They're powerful systems, but mechanically complex, sensitive to water quality, and expensive — often several thousand euros. The OneZero is sized for a different job: purifying fresh water already in the tank. Simpler, quieter, and considerably more affordable.
